These Cambodian women are at crucial points in their struggle. They are fighting to hold onto their houses in the Day Krahorn slum on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. The city is currently experiencing a real estate boom in which rents are soring and many new buildings are being constructed. Naturally the slums near the city center are benefiting from a “city planning” project.
The women we went to see are fighting the city and government authorities and the developers, trying to keep themselves and their families from being expelled and “relocated” in some place they don’t know, often very far from the city center.
They are fighting against the expropriation of their land, which is where they live, and also the place where they, their children and grandchildren were all born.
